Summer is upon us and that means golf season is in full swing. In order to have a fun and safe golf season it becomes important to take care of your most valuable piece of golf equipment – your body! Just like any other sport, golf can be demanding of the body and produce injury. One of the most common injuries for golfers is lower back pain. The lower back pain experienced by golfers can be a result of muscle strain, joint irritation between vertebra, or even disc irritation from repetitive rotation. Many times golf can reproduce symptoms from a previous injury. Here are a few suggestions to prevent lower back pain from affecting your golf game.
Warming up may be the biggest key to prevention of muscle strains. In addition to stretching, simply try several less vigorous swings before stepping on the first tee and trying to bomb one down the middle. Several lighter swings before playing will help loosen muscles and lubricate the joints in the lower back as well as the shoulders and hips. Also, a general aerobic exercise program increases endurance so that proper mechanics are maintained throughout the round without getting sloppy.
Though you may have heard these recommendations before, you may not know that they may also help improve your performance. Some of your body’s limitations to the golf swing are the exact reasons for developing lower back pain: muscle tightness, joint stiffness and restriction, poor lower back stability or muscle imbalance and poor overall endurance. If your lower back pain persists despite the recommendations above or if you are simply looking for an edge to improve your game, what better way to address your limitations than with physical therapy, pilates or massage. Let us help you with your body, so that getting a tee time becomes your only limitation.
